Dead Island roundtable scares up some details

Expect the crafting aspect for weapons to be important in Dead Island. While some new weapons can be found, players will need to track down the right materials to make weapons that are powerful enough to drive fear into the zombie outbreak that has taken over the resort island. Players will start with a basic knife for survival, but don't expect to last too long with just that weapon.

Dead Island Roundtable Interview
http://www.rpgamer.com/news/Q3-2011/071511b.html
This past week, I sat down for a roundtable interview with Vincent Kummer, Deep Silver's Brand Manager, to chat about Dead Island as it reaches the end of its development. The roundtable consisted of me and a few other reporters from different web sites. It turned out to be a rather interesting session as it helped augment the information I was given during the demo at E3 last month.

There are also multiple classes of zombie that require different techniques to bring down.Larger zombies called thugs take a lot of damage and knocked us down more than once by swinging their gangly arms. In order to put a stop to this, we machete'd their arms into bloody stumps and then they fell with ease. Another type of zombie is basically a walking suicide bomber that can either take out a swath of zombies or your entire crew when it explodes if you don't kill it in time.

Fighting zombies is very satisfying in Dead Island, mostly because of the ability to chop off or crush limbs, and the need to, in many cases, also stomp the head of a downed zombie to really kill it. One thing that is interesting is how the game actually uses its animation system to procedurally adjust a character's head-stomp animation, rather than magically moving the stomper's body to the proper location to do a canned animation. The system still needs work, though, as there are some pretty funny bugs with how it looks from another player's perspective.

How the action plays is a lot like Left 4 Dead, where staying together is key and zombie attacks can come any time and from almost any angle. The difference is that your progression is tracked RPG-style and the open world of the game allows you to take quests and complete them in the order you choose. Our hands-on play took place in Banoi Island's main city area, and we were tasked with traveling around a city square and putting up banners on billboards, presumably to notify survivors of where to go to find safety.

The RPG elements are sure to add hours of extra content, as there are collectible weapons and upgrades available. For example, you can buy an electric attachment for a variety of melee weapons in order to shock/stun zombies. Combine this with random environmental events, like say, rain, and you can expect deadly results.

Fourth, role playing elements. They're all the rage, and any game worth its salt has them now-a-days; Dead Island follows suit nicely. Despite forcing the players to choose between four preset character models, the game allows you to build your character to your own style of play. The game has an "adrenaline" mode that you gain after a set number of zombie kills or over time that turns you into a death-wielding zombie killer, allowing you to massacre zombies around you, and it's one of the talent trees you can focus on upgrading. There's also a weapon/melee talent tree you'll want to upgrade, as well as a support tree, and there aren't enough points to upgrade everything. There also hasn't been a level cap announced, but during the demo, we were playing level 21 characters with some pretty hefty weapons choices.

E3 2011 Preview: Dead Island
http://www.atomicgamer.com/articles/1266/e3-2011-preview-dead-island After a fantastic trailer put Techland's Dead Island on many gamers' most-wanted lists and a rather spectacular showing at GDC this year cemented the game as a real contender in journalists' eyes, the hype for this upcoming zombie-action game is getting pretty huge - especially for a game that came pretty much out of nowhere only a short while back. Dead Island's brand of cooperative play evokes Left 4 Dead, but the melee-based focus and crafting system reminds us of Fallout 3 and even Dead Rising, while the open-world design of the tropical island feels like Oblivion meets Far Cry.

The demo was short and sweet, but everything from the score that sounds like John Carpenter playing Caribbean tunes to the intense opening sequence has me excited for the full game. Dead Island might be the first zombie game to make me feel like I am truly in danger, as the player - even despite the clear blue sky and gorgeous beach surrounding the mayhem.

Dead Island delivers dark, fun action in single- and multiplayer
http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011/06/dead-island-delivers-dark-fun-action-in-single--and-multiplayer.ars?comments=1#comments-bar When you play with more people—up to three other players can drop in and out at will—the number of zombies is increased, and the result is a game that leans more toward action than survival horror. Working together with friends to take down the zombies while sharing items and weapons is a very good time, even if I was playing with someone in PR and another writer.

Running and fighting drains your energy, which slowly replenishes. This is one of the key decisions that makes Dead Island a game based around exploration; this isn't purely a zombie hack-n-slash. As I made my way to an objective, I would often evade idle zombies as I prepared to face a group ahead. Even deciding to rescue a human character locked in a jeep was an uneasy call to make.

After its debut trailer shocked countless gamers, we wondered if Dead Island could possibly deliver a game to live up to the surprisingly dramatic video. That video, as well as our previous playtests, focused upon the single player experience. But at E3, we saw four-person cooperative play for the first time. Left 4 Dead with a plot, an open world and create-your-own weapons? Yes, please.

E3: Dead Island
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/110904-E3-Dead-Island
The combat and focus on melee weapons is similar to Dead Rising. You pick up paddles, cleavers and other items you come across in the game's world and use them to defend yourself. You can kick zombies, as well as attack directly or by throwing your weapon (which you then have to retrieve). From the first encounter on, the fights against the game's undead are horrifying. The way they latch on you to made me squirm. They grab a hold and nibble on you, until you shake them off with the triggers. They occasionally knock you down with a heavy attack, giving an opportunity for more zombies to gather round.Instead of running through hordes and knowing them down, I often chose to evade and fight strategically. This was partly out of fear, but the game's fatigue system also factored in the decision.

Ever since its teaser trailer, people have been wondering just exactly what type of game Dead Island would be. The brief demo on the show floor didn't unveil all of the game's secrets, but we've played enough to know it's something special. In short, it's Dead Rising meets Fallout 3 on a scenic island. You take on missions (some optional, some required), savage items scattered about and beat the living hell out of zombies along your way. It's the game's tone and attention to detail that sets it apart, however.

Set in an open world tropical island, hordes of different festering zombies await players around every corner while they embark on a variety of thrilling missions through the holiday resort. With firearms and ammunition being scarce on the island, the player must rely on discovering and utilizing items as weapons for self-defense and fighting off zombie hordes in intense melee combat. A diverse range of items can be collected and will later serve to transform the player's ordinary makeshift weapons into serious instruments of destruction.

The weapon upgrades and creation is very neat and the combinations are not only effective but also very cool. And the creations you make shouldn't be taken lightly. If you spend money and parts on making badass weapons it's important to take care of your weapons like repairing them any chance possible and not throwing them at zombies recklessly. Every weapon in the game can be thrown, but you'll risk losing the weapon if you do.

The DLC also comes with an exclusive weapon called the Brain Wave bomb and while I'm not entirely sure what that is exactly, it sounds pretty badass. The best thing about all this? The special edition is a free, automatic upgrade when you preorder the game at GameStop, so you don't have to shell out any extra money for it.

Gamers will take control of four characters, each of which has his or her own unique traits and abilities. Some will be fast and agile while others will be big and powerful. Choose wisely because you will want to stay with the character throughout your adventure as the more you play the more XP and abilities for that character you unlock. Dead Island has major roots in the RPG realm but the action and gameplay is that of a first person action title. As you play, you earn XP and will gather weapons, parts, and money.

The one element I don't like is the repair element of your weapons. After using your weapons a certain amount of time they fail and break down. Now I do like the stamina meter and you have to be careful about how much you dash or run as well as bash zombies, so you can't just button mash or melee the hell out of your character with your weapons. Each character you can play as has their own special skills and attributes. There are different types of zombies as well. Also after you kill your enemies you can search their bodies for items and extra cash. You will need cash to buy new weapons, upgrades, items, and weapon repairs.

You have one of four characters to choose from; Xian Mei, Logan, Sam B, and Purna. Depending on which one you choose, your character will have unique attributes different from the others. I got the Xian Mei, so I was good at knives and short range weapons. That game takes stamina into account, so you can't just go blindly flailing your arms.At one point, I picked up a sledgehammer and when I tried to use it, my stamina dropped drastically. Clearly this weapon was meant for someone else.
